The Good Ship Lollipop
When I'm not working or attempting to take over the world, I do a huge amount of volunteering for different organisations. It keeps me off the street I guess and I do get alot of enjoyment out of it. I also learn something new everytime.
Did you know that a balloon tied to a piece of string can keep a child occupied for at least 20 minutes? Thats one balloon, and one length of wool, tied to it. Amazing. There was no x-box, tv, dvd player, anything technological and complicated, just one balloon and one piece of string. Children
are so cool in the way that they have the most simplistic of tastes, anything can become a potential play thing and averter of boredom. My neice can turn vegemite toast into the messiest fun going.
Children are great in that each time I wish that I could have their simplistic view on life, I'm sure it's just adults who make it all confusing and complicated for ourselves. We're the ones who think that material goods will make us happy, hey, give some children a sausage on a stick and a ride on a carousel horse and their good with that. When I was younger my Dad taught me this game with a stick and a carved wooden peg. It was something they used to play in the camps during the war. The trick was, you had to flick this peg with the stick and try to keep that peg in the air. It's a stick and a peg for goodness sake. But by golly it kept us occupied for hours! How to keep that blasted peg in the air and beat each other with the longest time you could keep that peg going. We couldn't afford lots of things, but we never lacked for imagination, and we surely were never bored!
So here's to all those children who I work with each week, who keep teaching me that even when they are sick, or injured and life has really dealt them a pretty poor blow, there's still fun in simplicity. There's always something to smile about even if work is the pits, your nose is dripping like a tap, the calls keep coming in and you're ready to just tell everyone where to put there heads, there is still some small thing to keep you going. Today mine is the fact that it's my last day for 2 weeks, I'm going on holidays, YAY! And I can tell you, in that time, about the most complicated it's going to get it deciding what time I want to get out of bed, what I want for brekkie (vegie toast!), oh, and what time I need to wake up to get to the airport on time to pick up Antigone. :-)
Oh, and while i'm on holidays, I just might spend a bit more time lying flat on my back in the grass trying to make shapes out of the clouds scudding past in the sky. Coz that's kinda fun, in a childish sort of way. ;-)
