My BFF

Once upon a time I started working with a fabulous workplace that promised to suit my need to express ideas about my career and other crazy thoughts. The team was small with many people being around the same age as me (hoorah) and all was happy. Now on my first day in this place, I met this funky chick who had great hair in a multitude of reds and blondes and browns and others (foils girls, got to love foils). She loved the same clothing stores are me, we read the same books, talked the same stuff and we used to hang out in a work type environment all the time. She even helped me plan my wedding. Now stuff happened back in her hometown and she had to leave and head back.

And it sucked.

I realised in that time that I had worked with her for 2 years, that I’d never spent the time getting to know this cool, neat, fab person who made me laugh and could always be counted on when a tissue or cup of tea was required. She up and headed home with her fabulous husband and I stayed behind and kicked myself for seemingly wasting so much time. You know the adage you never know what you had until it was gone? Well, yeah, I’m a bit slow.

So I worked through my crap divorce, the move back to my parents place, and the eventual buying of my own little piece of independence and now the planning of my second wedding and through it all she’s been a bastion of advice, support and emails to kick me through those really sucky days. In the same time I’ve been a person on the end of emails and phones as she had her beautiful little girl who I could almost say is far cuter than my niece, no serious, she is a cutie! In the whole time she’s been gone, we’ve caught up whenever we can in real life to shop, hang out at conferences, and garner any minute we can get to pass on proper people type hugs. And frankly, I miss her lots.

Last night while sitting having a few drinks after a top day spent hanging out with my folks (I cooked them a huge seafood lunch), I was in that slightly tipsy state of thanking my lucky starts for all I had. You know the state, the one before you slide into the ol’ ‘boohoo I don’t really have much to be thankful for part’ except I didn’t get to that. I was thankful for my family (even my ratbags sisters), my man, the opportunity to purchase and live in my own little house, my puppies and everything else and also my top-est friend (and her wonderful husband and gorgeous daughter) in the whole world. This was said slightly tipsily at the time but it’s true. There is nothing I would not do for this chick. If she is upset, flowers are on the way. If I had more fundolies I would be flying up there to take her for tea and huge chats and lots of hugs. Hey, I would have children for her if it came to that. Yeah, pretty big stuff hey?!

But she is the top-est chick I know and I would do anything for her. And it only took me like years to work that out. Idiot that I am.

So chickee, you know who you are. You’re one of the coolest, bestest, most wonderful people that I can be lucky enough to count as a friend and top sort. I miss you like crazy and wish I could be there during this trying time for you. You have the most wonderful guy in the world, and a have I mentioned fabulous little cutie for a daughter? And I envy you so bad those things, but know you deserve them immensely. Fabulous Mum that you are too.

And that’s all I can say.

  • Hey Rom, as you know, I know exactly what you mean. It sucks being apart from your bestie. My philosophy is to make my friends my family too so decisions on where we live will all be made together. Bliss.
