Baby blues

In the beginning there was the word, and the word was baby. Everything was baby. baby this, baby that.

April last year Riff and I decided that heck, we were engaged, we both wanted children sometime before my eggs became too old and his hair got even greyer so we talked and decided 'hey, what the hell, let's give it a shot. Should take a few months, right?' Wrong. Snap first month. Seemed child was going to happen straight away.

But then week 6 kicked in and there was the dreaded 'oh crap, have I just lost something that I didn't realise I had?' trip to the docs. Scan showed a tiny tiny little space prawn looking thing that had a heartrate faster than the drummer from Def Leppard could tap out a solo. (Did you know that dude's got one arm?) Houston, there was a baby, and while it had almost not been a baby, it was still there.

Fast forward through my 30th birthday, no alcohol, us not telling anyone except my folks who of course had guessed, and a few super close friends who I had been plying for information right from the work go. (Hi Antigone) Week 18, routine tests arrived.

Blood test, all clear. Phew.
Scan. Oh yes, fingers and toes all present and accounted for. Oh, but looky here. Seems you have some strange things going on, how about you go off to the hospital for so more indepth scans and specialist check-ups. Crap. We had presence of a rather unusally large cyst in the cranial cavity, which in terms I could understand meant, a large amount of fluid was doing some pushing on the brain. Add to that the fact that the child was missing an artery through the umbilical cord. Yuh hah, bloody pumping but having to pump super harder since there was one less channel. What did this mean? Well, Mister Specialist who gets an award in scare mongering proceeded to 'encourage' us to take further tests. With a 1 in 300 chance that the child would die from those tests anyways but as he said 'if the tests show anything up, then that would mean the child would either die before birth, be born and die shortly there after, or be born and be so severely disabled that it might be a saving grace.' What the! Some scary shit at that stage, oh and it was only 2 days before the wedding and picking up the house keys. Bloody hell.

We nitched the tests, thought we'd take our chances and see what happened. 28 week scan showed cyst had dissolved but artery was still missing of course. Regular Doc filled us in that this wasn't a bad thing and that child was still developing fine. WHY THE HELL DIDN"T THE FIRST DUDE TELL US THIS!!!

And now we're at 41 weeks almost. Yup, this child who previously didn't seem to want to hang around, caused some super-sized headaches and basically made me wonder sometimes where the hell the escape key was to get me out of this scenario is hanging around. Yup, overdue, uncomfortable, and really quite ready to be able to tie my own shoelaces again. I guess it's good that we've made it this far, But come on little person, give me a break. Isn't it time we met this bundle of soggy-cryingness who has given us some really interesting headaches in the past?

Doc appointment tomorrow, if he recommends I make another 'just in case' appointment for a fortnight, I am going to scream. Bad enough I have a 'just-in-case' next Friday. Any bets that I make it to that one?
